ABDUL WAHAB DARAWSHE

Born in Kfar Iksal on 12 Oct. 1943; attended Nazareth High School; studied Education and History at Haifa University; worked as a teacher, then as Head Master of a High School; served as National Supervisor for the Israeli Education Ministry; was the only Arab MK in the Labor Party in the 1980; served as MK from 1984-99, first for the Labor, from which he broke off in 1988 following the outbreak of the first Intifada and formed a single-member parliamentary group, which became the Arab Democratic Party; served as its MK until 1996, then as MK for Mada-Ra`am, until 1999; led an Arab-Israeli delegation that met with PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat in Tunis in Oct. 1992 in an effort to step up the Mideast peace process (in response, Likud announced it would try to remove his parliamentary immunity and have him charged under Israel’s anti-terrorism law); Chairman of the Arab Democratic Party; Chairman of the Arab Association for Education and Grants in Nazareth; Exec. Committee member of the Education Council of the International Peace Center; Board member of the Education Institute for Jewish-Arab Coexistence, the Central Committee of the Teachers Union, the Follow-up Committee for Arab Affairs, and the Peace Center; proposed in mid-2001, that Israeli Pres. Katsav address the PLC and call for a hudna, in order to reach a ceasefire without either side forgoing its demands of the other; has written several articles on education and politics.
