Born in Al-Ja’ouna near Safad in 1942; received his primary and secondary education in Damascus; enrolled at Damascus University in 1969 and then at Toulouse University, France, where he earned a PhD in 1974; worked as Professor at the University of Beirut from 1975-77; served as cultural advisor to NASSR foundation in Beirut from 1977-1983; became editor-in-chief of the periodical Problems and Testimony from 1988-1993; Professor for Theoretical Studies at the University of Damascus from 1995-1998; served as Director of the Arab Center for Strategic Studies from 1995-2001; works for Al-Karmel, published by Mahmoud Darwish; published his works in different magazines like Al-Mawqif, Shu’oun Filastiniyyah and Al-Karmel; has written several books, incl. Theory of the Novel and the Arabic Novel, which received the prize as best Arab book at the 2000 book fair in Cairo; was awarded the Palestinian Prize of Literary Criticism by the Palestinian Ministry of Culture in Dec. 2004 (as part of the Palestine Cultural Prizes of 2000) for his literary studies on the Arab novel.
