Born in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem, in 1942; fled with his family to Bethlehem in the course of the 1948 Nakba; moved to the US in 1960 and enrolled at Duke University, from where he received a BA in Political Science and Economics in 1964 and an MA in 1965; joined the Department of Political Science at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), in 1969, focusing his research on American policy towards the Middle East, American public opinion, the Palestine Question and the Middle East; earned a PhD in Political Science from the University of Grenoble, France, in 1972; Professor of Political Science and Middle East Affairs at UTC; was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at Birzeit University from 1995-1996; has served as a member of various study groups on the Middle East convened by the Brookings Institution and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; Director of the A.M. Qattan Foundation for Educational Research and Development, Ramallah since 1998; Advisory Board member of the Council for the Council for Palestinian Restitution and Repatriation (CPRR); visiting Professor at the AUC in April 2002; was appointed Head of the Dept. of Political Science, Public Administration, and Nonprofit Management at UTC in summer 2004; has written numerous articles and essays and (co)authored/edited several books, incl. Lebanon: Crisis and Challenge in the Arab World (1977), American Public Opinion and the Palestine Question (1986), and Public Opinion and the Palestine Question (1987).
