Born in Taybeh, near Ramallah, in 1924; grew up in Jerusalem; was educated at Al-Rashidiyeh College in Jerusalem until 1942, then enrolled at the Jerusalem Law College, from where he graduated in 1947; was a founding member of the Jordan Bar Association in 1949; member of the Exec. Council of the Jordan Bar Association from 1949-67; served as Chairman of the Lawyers’ Union in the West Bank from 1967-84; was among the initiators of the lawyers’ strike in the West Bank in 1967; founding member and Chairman of the Exec. Council of the Professional Association Center, Jerusalem, from 1970-84; was one of the architects of the National Guidance Committee from 1978-83; was repeatedly arrested by Israeli authorities for political agitation and alleged ‘incitement’ against the occupation during 1980-81 and placed under town and house arrest; serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Arab Thought Forum, Jerusalem, since 1977; in 1980, was the first Christian Palestinian to make a political speech in the Haram Ash-Sharif compound since 1929, on the occasion of a conference against settlements held by the National Guidance Committee; is honorary member of the Higher Islamic Committee in Jerusalem since 8 Oct. 1987.
