HASHEM ATTA SHAWWA

Born in Gaza in 1919; educated at Al-Hashimiyya School in Gaza, then at the Friends’ School in Ramallah; returned to Gaza and worked in the family business (growing and exporting citrus) after 1935; was Chairman of the Citrus Fruit Union in Gaza and member of the Society for Citrus Exportation; the business went down due to Israeli land expropriation and uprooting of trees; established the Bank of Palestine Ltd. in Gaza in 1960, serving as Chairman of its Board; the bank, which gave loans to Palestinian businesses, was closed by an Israeli military order following the occupation of Gaza in 1966; struggled to have the bank re-opened by court order and finally managed to do so in 1981, after which it grew and opened branches across Palestine; was also elected member of the Gaza Municipal Council in 1967; died on 9 Nov. 2002.
