Born in Kufr Rumman on 8 Dec. 1961; grew up in Balata Refugee Camp near Nablus (his family was displaced from Jaffa during the 1948 Nakba); holds a BA in Management and Political Science from An-Najah University; joined Fateh in 1978; was arrested and interrogated by Israeli authorities around 23 times prior to the first Intifada and detained for 18 months as well as held under house arrest; is one of the founders of Fateh’s Shabiba student movement; was deported on 13 Jan. 1988 to South Lebanon for his political activities, becoming the first activist to be deported during the first Intifada; represented the PLO in Latin America and was in charge of the election of PNC members in Latin America; served as Vice-Pres. of the International Islamic Youth Conference in Senegal in 1989 and in Khartoum in 1992; was elected member to the Exec. Committee of the GUPS (assigned to follow up student movements inside the OPT) in 1990; member of the PNC’s Political Committee; was allowed to return to Palestine in April 1994; co-founded the Supreme Council for Coordination of Fateh Activities together with Faisal Husseini and Marwan Barghouthi; became Director of Student and Youth Organizations at the Ministry of Youth and Sports; was elected PLC member for Nablus (Fateh independent) in the Jan. 1996 elections; was a member of the PLC’s Human Rights, Political, and Parliamentary Monitoring Committees; lecturer at the Palestinian Center for Democracy and Elections, Jerusalem; harsh Arafat/PA critic, especially regarding corruption and their dealing with refugee rights; head of the Committee for the Defense of Palestinian Refugee Rights; was arrested by Israeli Authorities in Balata Refugee Camp on 17 March 2003 and continues to be arrested as of July 2006.
