Born in Jerusalem on 26 Nov. 1936; completed his secondary education at Rashidiya School in Jerusalem; joined the Islamic Movement in Jerusalem in 1950; studied Civil Engineering at the University of Cairo, graduating with a BSc in 1961; while studying, became an Islamic activist in the Palestinian Students’ League in Egypt; worked as an engineer in the Jordan Valley (1961-62), then in the Kuwait Municipality (1962-66); moved to Jordan to work on the Khaled Dam project of the Yarmouk River from 1966-71; returned to Kuwait and worked on the Kuwait Towers Project for one year (1971-72); then became Manager of the King Talal’s Dam in Jordan from 1972-78; opened his own engineering office in 1978 and worked as engineer until 1989; became a Hamas member in 1989 and; headed the Hamas delegation to the first dialogue with Fateh in Yemen in Aug. 1990, and in the first talks with PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat in Khartoum in Sept. 1991; head of Hamas’ information service (effectively spokesman) from late 1992, based in Amman; was arrested by the Jordanian authorities in Aug. 1999 and was deported in Nov. 1999 to Qatar; finally permitted back into Jordan in 2001 on the condition that he freezes his political work with Hamas within Jordan; member of the Hamas politburo.
