IBRAHIM ( SHEIKH ) SARSOUR

Born in Kufr Qassem in 1959; studied English Literature at Bar Ilan University, graduating with a BA in 1981; was Head of Kufr Qassem Local Council from 1981-98; served as spokesman for the (moderate) southern branch of the Islamic Movement in the 1990s and became its leader in 1998; also acts as publisher of its weekly newspaper Al-Mithaq (The Covenant); participated – together with then Sephardic Chief Rabbi Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron – in the first-ever Islamic-Jewish dialogue on social justice, held in Beersheba in Sept. 2002; participated in the Arab League conference in Cairo in April 2004, which hosted for the first time Israeli Arab politicians under the title “The Strategic Congress for Ties between the Arab World and the Arabs of 1948;” ran under the united list of the UAL and the Arab Movement for Renewal (Ra’am-Ta’al) in the March 2006 elections and was elected as one of 4 MKs of the party; serves as a member in the Internal Affairs and Environment Committee, the Committees for Children`s Rights and the Status of Women, and in the Jerusalem and the Social-Environmental Lobbies.
