Born in Cairo in 1951; received her BA in Political Sciences from Cairo University in 1974; moved to Paris, where she studied Political Science at Nanterre ‘Paris X’ University, graduating with an MA in 1979; married Saleh Abdul Jawad Hamayel and came to Palestine, where she lives since 1979; worked as Assistant Professor of Development and Gender Studies at Birzeit University since 1983; served as Director of the Women’s Studies Center at Birzeit from 1997-98; co-founder of the Women’s Studies Institute at Birzeit University in 1994; co-founder of the Women’s Affairs Technical Committee; earned a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, UK in 2004, majoring in Gender and Women Studies; has authored numerous papers, articles and studies on women, children and politics; most recently The NGOisation of the Arab Women’s Movement, IDS Bulletin, Sussex University Press (Oct. 2004); lectures on gender and politics in Birzeit’s Women’s Studies Program and Cultural Studies Dept.
