Born on 18 July 1952; received a BA in Philosophy and Sociology from the University of Haifa; General Secretary of the Communist Party in Israel (Rekah); served as Chairman of the Union of Arab Students (inside the Green Line); member of the Board of Directors of the Emile Tuma Research Center; member of the communist-led Hadash Front – The Democratic Front for Peace and Equality (DFPE), representing it in the Knesset; then MK for the DFPE – Arab Movement for Change (Hadash Ta’al); worked as part of his Knesset membership on issues related to women, children, science and the environment; gained notoriety in Feb. 2000 by raising the issue of Israel’s atomic program in the Knesset, the first time such a debate had ever been staged, claiming that Israel had “200-300 atomic bombs”, and calling for the release of Mordechai Vanunu; survived a car bomb attack on 24 Oct. 2003 which was widely considered to be linked to his harsh critic of Israel’s stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), incl. nuclear arms; in Dec. 2004, was banned from exercising his right to speak in the Knesset and its committees for ten Knesset sessions following a complaint filed by MK Limor Livnat accusing him of disrespect after making negative statements on the State of Israel; served as member in the Knesset Internal Affairs and Environment Committee, the Labor, Social Affairs and Health Committee, and the Environmental Lobby during the 16th Knesset (2003-06).
