JAMAL ABDUL LATIF SHOBAKI

Born in Ithna in 1952 to a refugee family from Beit Jibrin; graduated with a BA in Geography from the Arab University in Beirut; Fateh member and activist during the first Intifada, for which he was imprisoned by Israel for ten years; member of the Fateh Revolutionary Council; member of the PLO Central Council; elected PLC member (Fateh) for the Hebron district in the Jan. 1996 elections; head of the PLC Economic Committee and member of the PLC Political and Prisoners Committees; was appointed Minister of Local Government in the cabinet of PM Mahmoud Abbas on 30 April 2003; became member (without portfolio) in the Oct. 2003 Emergency Govt. of the PA and Minister of Local Government in the subsequent cabinet of PM Ahmed Qrei’a in Nov. 2003 (until the cabinet reshuffle in Feb. 2005); served as Chairman of the Higher Committee for Palestinian Elections from April 2004; ran unsuccessfully in the 2006 PLC elections (Fateh, Hebron district).
