MAHER SULEIMAN AL-KURD

Born in Jerusalem on 8 Oct. 1947; studied at the AUC and received a BA in Political Science and an MA in Political Economy; continued his studies and earned a PhD in Economics from the University of Leipzig, Germany; PLO member, serving as Director of Economic Affairs of the Occupied Territories in Tunis in the late 1980s; longtime Economic Adviser to PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat also a close associate of Ahmed Qrei’a; was involved – together with Ahmed Qrei’a and Hassan Asfour – in the secret and initially informal talks with Israelis at Oslo in Jan. 1993, that eventually led to the DoP; works as Sec.-Gen. of the Higher Commission for Investment and Finance at the PA President’s Office since 1995; also served as PA Deputy Minister of National Economy from 1996 until after the Jan. 2006 PLC elections; headed the Palestinian delegation to the talks for the development of trade exchange between Palestine and Egypt in 1998.
