MOHAMMED RATEB (ABU MAHER) GHNEIM

Born in Jerusalem in 1937; joined the Muslim Brotherhood in the 1950s but left it in 1957-58; joined Fateh shortly after; became regional commander of Fateh in Jordan in Feb. 1968; member of the Fateh Central Committee since Aug. 1968, in charge of mobilization and organization; attended a training course in China in June 1968 and became Yasser Arafat’s deputy for military administration in Jan. 1969; played a role in the civilian organization in Lebanon; head of the PLO Organization Dept. in Tunis; Arafat loyalist but opposed to Oslo, therefore refusing to return to the Palestinian territories and to hold posts in the PA; based in Tunis; was involved in the inter-Palestinian talks in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
