Born in Sebastia, Nablus, on 9 Dec. 1961; received a BA (1985) and an MA (1989) from the Dept. of Islamic Studies, An-Najah University, Nablus; was elected Pres. of the Student Council at An-Najah from 1980-81; worked as a lecturer at An-Najah from 1989-90; continued his studies and earned a PhD in Middle Eastern Studies from Manchester University, UK, in 1996; returned and became an Associate Professor of Islamic Studies at An-Najah University and a part-time lecturer at Al-Quds Open University; co-founded a health center in Sebastia in 1996; participated in a special program on religion at New York University, US, in 1998; became Dean of the Faculty of Shari’a at An-Najah University; was a Steering Committee member of An-Najah University’s Workers League from 1997-2001; served as member of the Planning and Development Committee of An-Najah University from 1998-2001; was elected Chairman of the Consumer Society (Jam’iya ta’awuniya Istihlakiya) at An-Najah; also lectures in training programs and workshops on issues related to Islam, women, youth and family services; has published numerous papers on globalization, identity, Islamic culture, incl. The Palestinian-Israeli Peace Process (1999), as well as a book on domestic violence against women from an Islamic Shari’a point of view; following the PLC 2006 elections, was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education by the Ismail Haniyeh Government.
