Born on 26 Nov. 1943; from the village of Kufr Qara’ in the Galilee; studied three years at the University of Tel Aviv; worked as a teacher; Labor Party member, incl. member of the its Central Committee; Knesset member since 1988; served as Vice-Chairman of the Knesset from 1988-92 and again from 1996-99; was appointed Deputy Minister of Health in 1992 (until 1996); was appointed Deputy FM under PM Ehud Barak in Aug. 1999, which received much criticism; member of the Central Committee of the Histadrut and Chairman of its International Relations Dept.
