OMAR MAHMOUD MOHAMMED AL-QASSEM

Born in the Old City of Jerusalem on 13 Nov. 1941; educated at Al-Rashidiyeh School in Jerusalem graduating in 1958; worked as a teacher in Jerusalem; then studied English Literature at the University of Damascus, graduating with a BA in 1964; while at university, joined the ANM; returned and worked as a teacher in Jerusalem and Jenin; volunteered to teach in Al-Maqassed Schools to eliminate illiteracy; joined the PFLP in its early years and was in charge of organizing and training their first fidayeen; after 1967, active in organizing armed resistance, organizing, among other things, the Union of Teachers; underwent military training in Egypt and Syria; fought in the Battle of Karameh in 1968; became member of the military leadership of the PFLP in 1968 and was elected Central Committee member; was captured near Kufr Malik, Ramallah area, by Israeli forces on 28 Oct. 1968 and sentenced to life in prison by Israeli authorities; was among those who split from the PFLP and formed the DFLP in Feb. 1969; began to organize the DFLP in the Israeli prisons and detention camps; served as DFLP Central Committee member; among the Intifada leaders in 1987 inside Israeli prisons; tortured in prison until his death on 4 June 1989.
