QAIS ABDUL KARIM ( ABU LAILA ) SAMARAI

Born in Iraq in 1940; was active with the Ba’ath Party in Iraq; studied Economics in England from 1959-62; returned to Iraq, where he organized a left opposition and was arrested and detained by the Ba’athist regime in 1963; worked in journalism from 1965-67; joined the Palestinian resistance in 1967; former member of the PFLP; left the PFLP to form, together with Nayef Hawatmeh, the Popular Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PDFLP), later known as DFLP; member of the DFLP politburo and its Central Committee since 1969; is thought to have written the seven articles in Al-Hurriya from Aug.-Oct. 1973, signed ‘Yasari Filastini’ (a Palestinian leftist), which developed what was known as the “Transitional Program”, a prelude to the idea of a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict; arrived in the Palestinian Territories in April 1997 and established the DFLP offices in Ramallah; member of the DFLP politburo and the PLO Central Council; was elected as PLC member (DFLP-affiliated The Alternative list) in the Jan. 2006 elections.
