QASEM AR-RIMAWI

Born in Beit Rima in 1918; educated at Al-Rashidiyyah School and the Arab College in Jerusalem; worked as accountant in the British Postal Administration; became Chairman of the Arab Party in 1944; served as editor of Al-Wihda Al-Maqdisiyyah (the Jerusalemite Union) newspaper from 1945-1947; in 1947, co-founded – with Abdul Qader Al-Husseini – the Holy Jihad forces and was appointed leader of the forces in Jerusalem and Ramallah following Abdul Qader Al-Husseini’s death in 1948; after the entry of Jordanian forces to the Birzeit area he was denied access to the country due to his political activism; moved to Damascus and then to Cairo; became Secretary in the All-Palestine Government in 1949; enrolled at the AUC and graduated with a BA in Sociology in 1952; became representative of the All-Palestine Government for the UN; continued his education at Columbia University, US, gaining an MA in 1954 and a PhD in 1956; wrote articles at Al-Bayan newspaper, published in New York; was Dir.-Gen. of the Phosphate Mines Company in Jordan until 1960; served as Chairman of PLO delegations to different Latin American countries in 1964; member of the first PLO Exec. Committee, established in Aug. 1964, where he served as Director for Arab Affairs; became member of the Jordanian House of Representatives’ 9th Council together with Kamel Erekat, serving from 1967-76; was appointed Jordanian PM and established a new government on 3 July 1980 following the sudden death of PM Abdul Hamid Sharaf; resigned from the post of PM on 28 Aug. 1980; has also written poetry; one of his books, Alarm Signal (1951), was translated into English and depicts the issue of Palestinian refugees; died in 1983.
