Born in Al-Shati RC, Gaza, in 1959; received a Diploma in Science Education from the UNRWA Teachers’ Training College; worked as a teacher of Science and Mathematics at UNRWA schools from 1980-2003; volunteered also as preacher in the mosques of Gaza; served as a member of the UNRWA Teachers’ Committee in the Gaza Strip from 1990-2003 and as its Head from 1996-2003; studied Islamic Studies at Al-Quds Open University from 1997-2000; holds the title of a Sheikh and works as a preacher and teacher in Gaza; is one of the senior Hamas representatives in the Gaza Strip, at times serving as one of its spokesmen; was an aide to Sheikh Ahmed Yassin; was involved in recent inter-Palestinian dialogue on ceasefires and Palestinian unity; Hamas representative in the Intifada follow-up committee; was elected as PLC member (Change and Reform, Gaza City) in the Jan. 2006 elections and subsequently appointed as Interior Minister in the Ismail Haniyeh Government.
