Born in 1927; served in the Jordanian army; trained at Sandhurst military academy; joined the Palestinian resistance forces in 1970, and planned unsuccessful coup in mid-1970; joined Fateh; served as Commander of PLO/Joint Forces in South Lebanon from 1972-77 and as deputy Director of PLO/Joint Forces Central Operation Room from 1977-82; survived a Syrian assassination attempt in 1978; led the PLO’s defense of Beirut during the 1982 Israeli invasion; member of the Fateh Revolutionary Council 1980-83; his criticism of the leadership’s stance, especially Yasser Arafat’s policy of appointing loyalists, peaked in May 1983, resulting in open fighting in Oct. 1983; split from Fateh and formed the dissident Fateh-Uprising in 1983, assisted by Syria; joined several anti-Arafat coalition during the 1980s and 1990s, incl. the PNSF and the ‘Damascus Ten’; totally opposed the peace process but has retreated from an active role since the mid-1990s.
