SALMA KHADRA JAYYUSI

Born in Salt, Jordan, in 1928 of a Palestinian father and a Lebanese mother; grew up in Acre and Jerusalem; holds a BA in Arabic and English Literature from the AUB and a PhD in Arabic Literature from the University of London; worked as a university professor in several Arab and American universities; founded the Project of Translation from Arabic Literature (PROTA) in 1980; was one of eight Palestinian women nominated for the Noble Peace Prize as part of the Project 1000 Women for the Noble Peace Prize 2005; authored different studies and anthologies related to Arabic Literature, incl. Modern Arabic Poetry (An Anthology) (Columbia University Press, 1991), Anthology of Modern Palestinian Literature (Columbia University Press, 1992) and a two-volume critical history entitled Trends and Movements in Modern Arabic Poetry (1995); died on 20 April 2023 in Amman, Jordan.
