Born in Jerusalem in 1963 to a Christian Catholic family; daughter of Raymonda Tawil; grew up in Nablus and Ramallah; attended the Rosary Sisters’ School in Jerusalem; obtained a scholarship at the Sorbonne in Paris; worked as a freelance journalist, based in Paris; was hired by PLO Chairman Arafat to work on his personal staff in Tunis and do PR for the PLO as well as act as Economics Adviser; secretly married Yasser Arafat in 1990; returned to Palestine with her husband in 1994 and settled in Gaza; established and led her own aid organization and engaged in political efforts to improve the status of women in Palestinian society; after the outbreak of the second Intifada in 2000, left with her daughter Zahwa to live in Paris; after the death of her husband in Nov. 2004, she moved to live with her daughter in Tunis.
