Born in Hebron in 1952; holds degrees on Islamic Religious Studies (1970) and Shari’a Law (1975) from Al-Azhar University in Egypt and an MA in Islamic Education from An-Najah University (1997); was arrested by the Israeli army during the first Intifada in 1989; served as Islamic judge and Imam of Al-Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron; known for his positive attitudes toward other religions and social groups; head of the Defense Group of Islamic and Christian presence in Jerusalem; Chief Justice of the Palestinian Shari’a Courts; was delegated by Pres. Yasser Arafat to attend the interfaith “healing and reconciliation” meeting on 23 March 2000 in Jerusalem’s Notre Dame Center hosted by Pope John Paul II during his visit to the Holy Land; was repeatedly arrested by Israel for “incitement.”
