Born in Gaza in 1950; studied Law in Beirut, graduating in 1978; worked in Tunisia with the PLO; moved to Cairo in 1991; was awarded the Palestine Prize for Poetry for “his achievements and aesthetic originality in the prose poem” in Oct. 1997; was Arab Writer in Residence at the Sub-Faculty of Near and Middle Eastern Studies at Oxford University, during 1998-99; Fellow at the Research Center of the St. Anthony’s College in Oxford, working on a project on Arabic poetry and comparative poetics; has translated many Arabic poetry texts into English, and (co-)edited several works, incl. Modernism and the Intrigues of the Antique: A Reflection on Arabic Poetry (Oxford, 2003), and Arabic Poetry & Orientalism (Oxford, 2004), and Selections from Ancient Arabic Poetry (Oxford, 2005); has published three collections of poetry, incl. Present Verbs (1986).
