Born in Jerusalem on 14 Jan. 1897 to a Greek Orthodox family; his father, lawyer Guirges Jawharieh, was close to Haj Salim Effendi Husseini, the mayor of Jerusalem; was a gifted musician since his childhood; worked as composer and musician on the ‘Oud (Oriental Lute) and other oriental instruments like Al-Rababah, performing on different occasions; died in Beirut in 1973; his memory has been revived when his diaries, documenting various aspects of daily life in Jerusalem under the Ottoman and Mandate periods, were published in two volumes by the Institute for Palestine Studies (2003 and 2005).
