Born in Jerusalem in 1945; went to Egypt in 1963 to study Science, Physics and Chemistry at Ein Shams University in Cairo, graduating in 1968; worked as a science instructor at the Women’s Teachers Training College in Ramallah from 1968-89; served as Board member of the Employees’ Club in Jerusalem from 1976-80; continued her studies and earned a Diploma in Education from the University of Jordan in 1978; served on the Board of In’ash Al-Usra Society, from 1978-88, and the Graduates’ Club from 1980-84, Ramallah; founded the Palestinian Federation of Women’s Action Committees in 1978 and served as its chairwoman until 1992; was imprisoned by Israel in 1979 and placed under town arrest for her membership in the DFLP’s politburo from 1980-86; member of the Advisory Committee to the Palestinian delegation to the 1991 Madrid conference; was head of the Interim Technical Committee on Women’s Affairs from 1992; joined Fida and became Exec. Committee member; member of the Jerusalem Link (a Palestinian-Israeli women’s network); was appointed Dir.-Gen. of the Directorate for Gender Planning and Development at MOPIC in Nov. 1995; left the post when she was appointed as Women’s Affairs Minister in the Nov. 2003 govt. of PM Ahmed Qrei’a; has published numerous articles and research studies focusing on conflict resolution and gender issues; was appointed Minister of Women’s Affairs in the Feb. 2005 cabinet of PM Qrei’a (until after the Jan. 2006 PLC elections); was one of eight Palestinian women nominated for the Noble Peace Prize as part of the Project 1000 Women for the Noble Peace Prize 2005.
