ZUHEIR MUSA AS-SOURANI

Born in Gaza in 1936 to an original Gazan family; went to Egypt to study Law at Cairo University, graduating with an LLB in 1956; worked for the Attorney General in Kuwait from 1956-58; returned to Gaza to work as a lawyer and judge, eventually at the Gaza Supreme Court (since 1972); served as Vice-Pres. of the Palestine Red Crescent Society in Gaza since 1973; Board of Trustees member of the Islamic University in Gaza since 1975; Board member of the Citrus Cooperative and the Citrus Growers’ Union since 1980; after Oslo, served as chief justice of the Palestinian court system; was appointed as the Attorney General for the PA in mid-1999; served briefly as PA Justice Min. from 29 Oct. 2002 until April 2003; became Chairman of the PA’s Higher Judicial Council; announced his resignation a few days after a bomb detonated outside his house in Gaza in Aug. 2005, saying that judges cannot work in an atmosphere in which there is absolute disregard for the law and no protection for the judicial authorities, but withdrew his resignation after Pres. Mahmoud Abbas promised to take measures to end assaults against judges and courts.
