ABDEL HAMID (SHEIKH) AS-SAYEH

Born in Nablus in 1907; studied at Al-Azhar in Egypt, specializing in Shari’a Law; worked as a teacher at An-Najah College from 1928-29; then served as a writer at the Shari’a Court in Nablus and was promoted to head of the writers in 1930; became Shari’a judge in Nablus in 1935; was appointed Sec.-Gen. of the Higher Islamic Shari’a Council in 1939; worked as Judge in the Shari’a Court from 1941 and as member of the Shari’a Appeals Court from 1946; became head of the Shari’a Appeals Court in 1948 (until Oct. 1967); was Chairman of the Supreme Islamic Council; headed the National Guidance Committee established in Aug. 1967 to organize resistance against Israeli policies and practices in Jerusalem, for which he was deported on 23 Sept. 1967 by Israel, marking the first actual deportation from the city; was appointed Minister of Religious Affairs in late-1967 (until Dec. 1968); was appointed as the Chief of the Judges and Minister of the Waqf and Islamic Affairs from June-Sept. 1970; was elected speaker of the PNC at the 17th PNC session in Amman in Nov. 1984; held that post until May 1993, when he resigned over the PLO’s negotiation stance; died in Amman on 8 Jan. 2001.
