ABDUL AZIZ AL-WAJIH

Born in Iksal, near Nazareth, in 1927; completed primary education in Nazareth, then enrolled at Khaduri Agricultural College near Tulkarem, graduating as an Agricultural Engineer in 1946; joined the military academy at Aleppo, Syria, graduating in 1949; was then commissioned a first lieutenant and served in the Syrian Army until 1959; was a major force behind the establishment of the PLA, and served as its commander until 1968; was also commander of the Popular Liberation Forces until 1970; graduated in 1971 with the rank of Colonel from the Soviet Military Academy; then resumed command of the PLA; was elected a member of the PLO Exec. Committee in June 1974, serving in the Dept. of Popular Organizations; critical of the Syrian regime; died on 6 May 1976.
