ABDUL RAHIM OMAR

Born in Jayyous, near Tulkarem, in 1929; studied in Qalqilya and Tulkarem; then enrolled at the University of London in 1949, where he focused on the study of Arabic and English Literature and Ancient History; returned and worked as a teacher in Jayyous from 1949-53; then moved to Kuwait and worked as a teacher until 1959; settled in Jordan and worked at the Jordanian Radio (until 1965), the cultural section in the Jordanian Ministry of Information (1965), and as producer of Al-Afkar magazine; became Director of the Palestinian section for the Jordanian Ministry of Information in 1967, then Assistant Director of the Jordanian Radio in 1970, and Director of the culture and arts section in the Ministry; also worked as playwright, poet, and as columnist at Ar-Ra’ie magazine; became, in 1974, the first head of the Jordanian Writers’ Union; awarded the Jerusalem Prize for Culture and Arts by the PA Ministry of Culture in 1990; died in Sept. 1993.
