Born in Massmiya, northeast of Gaza, in 1924; educated in Al-Majdal and the Arab College in Jerusalem, graduating in 1943; received a degree in Arabic Literature from Cairo University in 1950 and an MA in 1955; later earned a PhD in Arabic Literature in 1960; worked as a translator in the Franklin Publishing House in Beirut and the Near East Productions office; worked with UNESCO in Ramallah from 1962-64; served as Chairman of the Jordanian Writers’ Union from 1978-81; Professor of Arabic Language and Literature at the University of Jordan; was awarded the Jerusalem Prize for Culture and Arts in 1990.
