Born in the Old City of Jerusalem on 20 Dec. 1958; studied Medicine at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Rumania, and received an MD in 1983; member of the Palestinian Medical Association since 1984; was arrested upon his return from Rumania and jailed for ten months; was in charge of the Anesthesiology and ICU program at Maqassed Hospital, Jerusalem, from 1985-88; served as Sec.-Gen. of the Union of Health Work Committees in 1985-86, 1989-2001 and since 2002; was put under six-month administrative detention in 1988; Sec. of the Medical Association, Jerusalem, since 1992; was imprisoned by Israel on 19 Nov. 2001 accused of having assisted the PFLP in recruiting new activists; was released on 28 July 2002 but rearrested in Oct. 2002 and held in administrative detention until March 2003; in 2002, was a signatory of the ‘Cry from the Homeland’ statement, which condemned the PA’s policy of political arrests and called for a proper judiciary; was again arrested on 6 June 2005 and imprisoned at the Russian Compound Detention Center for political reasons, he actively lobbied against Israel’s ‘Separation Barrier’, he died in January 2008.
