ALI QAWASMI

Born in Hebron in 1940; received a BA in Chemical Pharmacy from the University of Alexandria, Egypt, in 1964; was deported to Jordan in 1969 for three years; returned in 1972; worked as a pharmacist; Fateh member; was arrested by Israeli in 1975 and jailed for three months; was again arrested during the first Intifada; was prevented from traveling for a long time; elected PLC member (Fateh) for the Hebron district in the Jan. 1996 elections; was appointed PA Minister of Transport in 1996 and remained in that post until 2002; faced extensive criticism of corruption in 1997 (a parliamentary panel recommended that he – together with Ministers Nabil Sha’ath and Jamil Tarifi – be dismissed on charges of corruption and stand trial); was appointed PA Minister of Youth & Sport in June 2002 (until Oct. 2002); serves as head of the Hebron Development Committee since 1996.
