Born in Gaza in 1934; studied Economy and Business Administration at the AUB, graduating in 1960; worked in an oil company in the Gulf for 12 years; returned to Gaza in 1974; participated in the Madrid Peace Conference in 1992; was elected Chairman of the Palestinian Union of Local Authorities, which was established on 5 Feb. 1998; was elected Deputy Chairman to the United Cities Organization in Lille, France, in June 1998; also worked in the field of agriculture, incl. exporting agricultural produce; was elected Mayor of Gaza on 26 July 1994, serving in this post until his death on 30 Nov. 2001.
