Born in Al-Bureij Refugee Camp, Gaza, in 1950 to a family originally from Zarnuqa village, near Ramleh; lecturer of Comparative English Literature at Al-Azhar University, Gaza; Chairman of the Palestinian University Professors’ Society and of the Workers’ League at Al-Azhar University, Gaza; known for his activism on the issue of the right of return and his criticism of the PA; dismissed from his position at the University in Sept. 1996 for making public information about incidents of forgery within the university; was arrested in May 1997 for two days for writing an article in Al-Bilad newspaper, criticizing the PA following the publication of the report of the General Control Commission on the abuse of authority and corruption; nominated himself as a candidate for the PA Presidency in the Jan. 2005 elections, but soon withdrew.
