Born on 1 Dec. 1948 in Nablus to a family hailing from Hebron; holds three MAs, one in Education, one in Urban Planning and the third in Regional Planning; also earned a PhD in Regional and Architecture Planning from the University of Pennsylvania, USA; upon returning from the US, founded the Geography Dept. at An-Najah National University in Nablus and serves as its head since; also served as head of the Higher Education Committee and as member of the Scientific Research Committee at An-Najah University; joined Hamas from its foundation; has been imprisoned several times by Israel for his political activism and was one of 416 Islamic activists deported to Marj Az-Zuhour, South Lebanon, in Dec. 1992, where he served as English language spokesperson for the deportees; was an elected member of the Arts College Council and elected Sec. of the Workers’ Union at An-Najah University, as well as involved in drafting the Student Council’s regulations; serves as PR person at the Patients’ Friends Society and as consultant for the Dweik Family Council in Hebron; has authored several books; was elected as PLC member (Change and Reform, Hebron district) in the 2006 elections and subsequently as PLC speaker.
