Born in Deir Ghassaneh, near Ramallah, in 1947; studied Dentistry at Alexandria University, graduating in 1972; began practicing as a dentist; was elected a member of the Al-Bireh Municipal Council in 1976; was placed under administrative town arrest for six months by the Israeli authorities in 1983; was head of the Dentists’ Association in Ramallah 1976-77; Central Committee member of the DFLP and its delegate to the PNC; was deported by Israel to Jordan on 18 Oct. 1985 for “politically subversive activities”; returned in 1993; became member of FIDA, within which he leads a pro-Fateh section; is a member of the PLO Central Council; served as PA Minister for Youth & Sports from 1994-96; was elected to the PLC in the Jan. 1996 elections as only FIDA member; served as Chair of the PLC’s Finance & Budget Committee in 1999 (resigned in protest of the PA Exec.’s ignoring the PLC’s requests to present the 1999 public budget on time); co-authored The Printing and Publishing Law: Critical Study and Commentary in 1999; was involved in drafting the new Election Laws in 2002 (finally passed by the PLC in 2005); is the elected General Coordinator of the Coalition for Integrity and Accountability (AMAN) since its foundation in Ramallah in Feb. 2000; served as Chair of the PLC’s Economic Committee in 2004-05.
