Born in Deir Al-Balah, Gaza, in 1943; attended Deir Al-Balah High School; joined Fateh in 1965; participated in a series of military training courses in China and the Soviet Union; graduated from the Lebanese University in Sidon in 1982; was in charge of the Southern Command of the PLO in Jordan, particularly Karameh; held the command over the Asifa forces in Damascus; returned to the Palestinian territories after the signing of the Oslo Accords and was appointed commander of the National Security Forces in the West Bank in 1995; was involved in liaison and coordination with Israeli commanders on issues related to redeployment of army forces from West Bank towns in the mid-1990s; member of the PLO Central Council.
