ISSA LOUBANI

Born in Mejeidel, near Nazareth, in 1926; received his secondary education in Nazareth; fled with his family from their home and became refugees in Nazareth in 1948; wrote early poetry since the 1940s; was trained as a teacher; was a member of the Communist Party; served as Secretary of the Union of Writers and Intellectuals in the late 1950s; was dismissed from his post as teacher in 1958 because of his revolutionary ideas; worked in journalism and opened a bookshop, which he ran until 1987; was placed under town arrest in the 1960s; wrote short stories, novels and essays in Al-Ittihad and Al-Jadid in the early 1970s; was in the editorial board of Al-Jadid magazine published in Haifa; continued his education after the 1970s and completed his BA and MA in Arabic Literature and worked towards a PhD but did not continue; among his works are the three-volume Letters on Love and Lovers (Nazareth, 1993-94); died in 1999.
