KARIM KHALAF

Birth: 1/1/1935 Death:1/1/1985
Born in Ramallah in 1935 to a Greek Orthodox Christian family; was educated at the National College in Ramallah and at the Coptic Orthodox School in Jerusalem; attended Cairo Law School; worked as criminal lawyer in the Israeli military government, incl. as District Attorney for Ramallah and Judge in Jericho; was elected mayor of Ramallah in 1972 (and re-elected in 1976); advocated non-cooperation with the Israeli military government; played a key role in the creation of the PNF; coordinated contacts with the PLO; on 2 June 1980, maimed by bombs, attributed to Jewish settlers from the Gush Emunim underground, losing his right leg; was dismissed as mayor by Israel in March 1982; was placed under town arrest in Jericho; died of a heart attack in Jericho on 30 March 1985.
