Born in Gaza in 1940; received a BA in Sociology from the University of Cairo; went to Jordan, where she worked with the Palestinian resistance; then moved to Beirut; was Pres. of the GUPW since 1971; renown advocate of women’s issues; also worked as poet and prose writer; her collections include Garlands of Thorns (1968), Love Poems for a Hunted Name (1974), Of Tears and the Coming Joy (Baghdad, 1974) and The Siege (Beirut, 1988); lives in Paris
