Born in Jerusalem in 1948; studied at the Faculty of Engineering at Alexandria University, graduating with a BA in 1969; continued his studies and earned an MSc and a PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US, in 1971 and 1973; Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT; serves as Co-Director of the MIT Summer Course on Nuclear Systems Safety since 1990; Tokyo Electric Power Company Professor of Nuclear Engineering at MIT since 2000; Director of the Center for Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems (CANES) at MIT; is a fellow of the American Nuclear Society since 1995; serves as Chairman of the MIT Reactor Safety Committee since 1997; serves as Chairman for the High-Level Waste Tank Advisory Panel in Richland, US, since 1998; has participated in numerous review committees, incl. that of the Nuclear Science and Engineering Dept. at the University of California, Berkeley (1995), the Division of Nuclear and Energy Systems, Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (2000), the Nuclear Energy Research Program, CEIMAT, Spain (2002), and the Committee on Alternatives and Strategies for Future Hydrogen Production and Use, National Research Council (2002-03).
