Born in Nablus in 1957; received an MA in Civil Engineering from the USSR in 1981; joined Hamas in the late 1980s; earned a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering, from Pennsylvania State University, USA, in 1992; returned and became a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at An-Najah National University in Nablus; serves as Hamas leader and spokesman in the West Bank; announced in March 2005 Hamas’ decision to take part in the PLC elections (that were scheduled to take place in summer 2005 but were postponed to Jan. 2006); was arrested on 26 Sept. 2005 by Israeli forces and remains in administrative detention as of July 2006.
