Born in Gaza in 1916; received his elementary education in the Gaza secondary school, then in Aleih, Lebanon; participated in the Revolt of 1936-39; was employed at the Gaza Municipality from 1937-44; founded and headed the Arab Palestinian Youth Club and its Jawwala Art Group in 1940 and became leader of the Arab Youth Organization in southern Palestine; was elected member in the Gaza Municipal Board in 1945; served as head of Al-Futwa forces under the leadership of Haj Amin Al-Husseini in 1947; became policy manager of Al-Jihad Al-Muqaddas newspaper (later Al-Liwa’), which was published occasionally between 1951-56; was appointed vice-mayor of the Gaza Municipality in 1953 and Mayor in 1955; following the 1956 occupation of Gaza, was removed from his post by Israel soldiers, who also shelled his house and arrested him; was jailed until March 1957 when the Egyptian administration returned; worked on improving Gaza’s infrastructure; was head of the Palestinian delegation to the first Afro-Asian People’s Solidarity Conference in Cairo in Dec. 1957, the Afro-Asian Youth Solidarity Conference in Cairo in 1958, and the Afro-Asian People’s Solidarity Conference in Guinea in 1960; became head of an Arab League committee to raise awareness on the Palestinian entity in 1957; was head of the founding committee of the Palestinian Arab National Union in 1958 and elected head of its Higher Executive Committee in 1960; supervised the publication of its magazine Nida’ Al-’Awda; resigned from his official posts in 1965 to dedicate his time for political resistance; initiated an underground movement (Tala’e Al-Muqawamah Al-Sha’biyya), which provided support for groups like the ANM and Fateh; was twice imprisoned by Israeli forces during 1968 and 1969 but eventually released due to his deteriorating health; was deported to Lebanon on 13 Sept. 1970 together with Dr. Haidar Abdul Shafi for supporting PLO activities; was released following the interference of the UN and returned to Gaza, where he died at Al-Shifa Hospital in March 1974.
