Born Hebron on 22 Dec. 1945; received a BSc in Dental Surgery from the University of London in 1973; worked for two years in the UK as a dentist and also taught there; returned in 1975 and worked as a dentist at Ramallah Hospital; set up a dental clinic in Jerusalem the same year; was a founding member and serves as Chairman of the Board of the Patients’ Friends Society since 1980; Board of Trustees member of Hebron University since 1983 and its Chairman since 1984; was arrested by the Israeli authorities in 1988 and held under administrative detention for some time (in April 1988, was adopted a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International); was banned from traveling abroad until the 1991 Madrid conference, to which he was appointed as a member of the Palestinian negotiating team; joined subsequent peace talks in Washington until his resignation in 1992; PNC member.
