NAKHLEH ZUREIK

Birth: NULL/NULL/1859 Death:NULL/NULL/1921
Born in 1859; raised in Beirut; moved to Palestine and joined the English College in Jerusalem; director of the English College in Jerusalem and its religious bookshop; teacher of Arabic starting from 1892; combined the spirit of knowledge with that of nationalism and remembered for insisting to dress up in Arabic styles; was part of the Society of Arab Brotherhood (Jami’at al-Ikha’ al-Arabi), which was affiliated with the revolutionary nationalist reform party of the Young Turks; many of his students became important personalities, incl. Khalil Sakakini, Khalil Totah and Omar Al-Saleh Al-Barghouthi; died in Jerusalem in 1921; is not survived by any offspring.
