Born in Damascus in 1907; his parents settled in Palestine since his childhood; received the diploma from the Teachers’ Training College in Jerusalem; studied at the Arab College in Jerusalem from 1921 to 1924; worked as teacher for 10 years in a public secondary school in Acre; received a scholarship to study at the University of London, where he earned a BA with distinction in Ancient History in 1939; returned and taught at the Arab College in Jerusalem; then spent a year in Cambridge and another year as Deputy Director of Education at Libya; joined the AUB as Assistant Professor of History in 1949; earned his PhD degree from the University of London in 1950; was a Visiting Professor at Harvard University in 1957-58 and in 1962-63; retired from the AUB in 1973; traced the Arab national solidarity to the days of the Umayyad Dynasty; received the Scholar Teacher Awards from AUB in 1999; wrote several books and articles both in Arabic and English; died on 27 Jul. 2006 in Beirut.
