OMAR AHMAD ( ABU HALAB ) SHIBLI

Born in Al-Tira, south of Haifa, on 21 Nov. 1945; became a refugee with his family in the 1948 Nakba, ending up in Syria; attended the UNRWA school in Nairab RC in Aleppo; later studied at Syrian universities; joined the Palestinian revolution in the 1960s; participated in the founding of the Palestinian Liberation Front (PLF) and served as its Deputy Sec.-Gen.; was appointed as member of the PLO Higher Military Council and the Palestinian Joint Command in 1977; was elected PNC member in 1983 and PLO Central Council member in 1984; returned to Palestine after the Oslo Accords were signed in 1994 and settled in Gaza; was elected PLF Sec.-Gen., succeeding the deceased Mohammed Abbas Zeidan, on 3 April 2004; died in 2010.
