Born in Gaza in 1937; attended primary and secondary school in Gaza; enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University in 1954, graduating with a PhD in Medicine in 1960; in 1963, specialized in Internal Medicine; became the head of the Internal Medicine Dept. at Shifa Hospital in Gaza from 1964-70; worked as Registrar of Internal Medicine for the Kuwait Government from 1970-72; then worked at a private Medical Diagnostic Center in Qatar, Gulf, from 1972-90; returned to Palestine and worked as consultant of Internal Medicine to the Gaza Patient Friends Benevolent Society from 1991-93; served as Director of the Palestinian Council of Health in Gaza during 1993-1994; elected PLC member (Fateh) for Gaza City in the 1996 elections; PA Health Min. from 1994 until June 2002; threatened to resign as Minister in June 1997 in connection with doctors` salaries; and again in 2000 over funding for his ministry; Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Gaza Community Mental Health Program.
