Born in Arrabeh, near Jenin, on 30 Oct. 1945; educated in Arrabeh, Jenin and Nablus; joined the ANM in 1961 and became one of its leaders in the Jenin area; from 1964-67, held a leading position in the ANM in Algeria; studied at Algeria University until the War of 1967; contributed in founding a GUPS branch in Algeria and was Chairman of its first Steering Committee; was arrested in Algeria after Algerian revolutionary leader Ahmad Ben Bella was deposed in 1965; received military training with the Algerian army in 1965 and 1967, the with the Iraqi army in 1968; returned to the West Bank after the 1967 War to take part in establishing the PFLP, becoming one of its military and political leaders; joined the DFLP after its breakaway from the PFLP in Feb. 1969 and served as its official spokesperson as well as its treasurer and leader of its military forces in Jordan; member of the DFLP Central Committee from 1969-71; PNC member since 1969 and member of the PLO Central Council; elected member of the PLO Executive Committee (representing the DFLP); was captured by Jordan in ‘Ajlun in July 1971 but released in 1973 as part of a general amnesty for DFLP members; was again arrested by the Jordanian authorities in 1974 and deported to Syria in 1976; returned to Jordan in 1989; supported Yasser Abed Rabbo’s split from the DFLP in March 1990 and was among the founders of Fida (the Palestinian Democratic Union); returned to Palestine on 15 Nov. 1995; was elected Sec.-Gen. of Fida in Feb. 1996 and confirmed in the post in Jan. 2000.
